A Beginner’s Guide to Setting Up a Fish Tank [2021]

Recently, I decided to set up an Aquarium at my home.

You know WHY?

To sleep in it.

g'night

NO! NO!

I was just trying to lighten the MOOD.

I get it. You’re panicking right before buying an Aquarium for your home.

Even I had some doubts in the beginning but over time, all my concerns faded out.

So, with this post, I’ll try to calm you down into making a decision that’s best for you.

And in the process, I’ll also answer some of your frequently asked questions.

Questions that’ll clear all of your doubts ULTIMATELY.

Now, without wasting any more time, let’s get started:

What to do with a Brand New Fish Tank?

I get it.

You’ve set up a new fish tank. You’re eager to fill it with FISH, SNAILS, or any other AQUATIC ANIMALS.

But at what COST?

With your all-new HOME AQUARIUM, you need to take it SLOW.

That’s the key???? here.

Home Aquarium is ultimately a living system where you want to keep its inhabitants SAFE. So, you need to be CAREFUL with it.

And for that, the 1st step would be to start by adding a few fish to it.

Monitor them regularly for a week or two & test the aquarium water for NH3 & NO3-. If the levels are at ZERO, you can continue to add FISH into the tank.

Decorating Your Aquarium

Everyone loves DECORATION.

Even a FISH. In a decorated aquarium they feel like at HOME.

Just like you would (In a nicely decorated place).

Besides, it’s a FUN TASK. You can’t complain much about it.

And when you decorate the tank, there are some things you need to keep in your HEAD

  • Some fish likes to swim in OPEN SPACES.
  • And some are lazy like YOU all. So, when relaxing, they tend to put on their best colors.

BUT what this all means?

This means, first you need to do research on the type of FISH you’re getting & then decorate the fish tank as per their natural TRAITS.

Hide and Seek

Are you worried about why your fish plays HIDE & SEEK all the time with you?

Don’t think too hard. It’s just NORMAL.

Imagine yourself,

  • being caught in a net at the store
  • placed in a bag and
  • ending up in a new place

Anyone would find this quite scary. And fish are no EXCEPTION.

So, you need the make them feel safe. And what’s a better way than decorating the Fish Tank.

If not this, another reason behind the excessive hide & seek could be the loneliness in the fish tank.

Setting up Home Aquarium Lights

Your fish need to rest!

But, there’s lighting all over the fish tank.

I get it. As I recommended, you wanted to decorate the fish tank.

Just like us humans, fish needs to REST. And they can’t do that with lights around them.

Besides, this also leads to preventing unsightly algae growth.

So, to make sure, your fish is getting sound sleep, create a Day & Night cycle using a built-in timer and you’re good to go.

That’s it

Cleaning Your Aquarium Regularly

Just like you clean your home, clean the aquarium to make it a healthy place for aquatic animals living in it.

However, it’s not like you’ve to clean it every day. Instead, let the newly bought aquarium settle in for some days.

Remember one thing, your rush might end up disrupting the bacteria that’s effective for your fish in many ways.

What to do Before Buying More Fish?

It can get really hard when you already have multiple fish species in your tank and you’re looking to buy some new ones.

In that case, what would you do?

Will you get some incompatible tank mates?

Or

Leave the idea of buying them all together?

To be HONEST, None of them is the right way to go.

Get help from a local aquarium expert. Give him/her a list of all the fish you have added to your home aquarium.

And get the right advice to make the choice right choice that’s best for you and your fish tank.

Avoid Overstock Your Tank

Once again, it’s great that you’re thinking about your fish & getting them in pair groups.

But beware of overcrowding your tank.

This can lead to further increase the stress level in the fish.

You don’t want that, RIGHT?

So, before you get any fish, keep a general rule of thumb in your mind – Don’t get more than 1 inch of fish per gallon of water.

There’s also a misconception that the growth of a fish is regulated by the size of your fish tank.

But that’s completely RUBBISH.

Instead, your fish goes through high levels of stress. Thereby increasing their chance of getting diseases. So, it’s best if you only choose species that are destined to thrive in your fish tank.

Never Overfeed Your Fish

I get it. You care a lot for your fish. But that doesn’t mean you should overfeed them.

That’s not good for anyone.

The best way for you would be to feed them food in small quantities.

Then wait and see if they need more food or not.

Their daily diet varies from fish to fish.

But scientific research recommend you to feed them food twice per day is
