Maintaining a dazzling aquarium is both aesthetically pleasing and healthy for the species within it.

Hand-cleaning your aquarium is essential, even if you use a filter for your fish tank.

Nitrates and other chemical waste products can accumulate over time, giving your fish tank a murky appearance.

Follow these instructions to keep your fish tank clean and clear at all times.

Always remember, it's best to leave your fish in their tank. Taking them out causes your fish to be stressed out more than they need to be, and you could hurt them by accident.

You can keep your fish in the tank while you clean it because you don't have to take out all the water to do a good job.

The first step in cleaning your fish tank is to remove the power to the filter and heater.

1. Start with the sides

When this occurs, algae on the tank's walls can be easily removed with a scraper. Acrylic tank walls need for a plastic (not metal) scraper to avoid scratching the surface.

The gravel can be laid down after the sides have been cleaned. You can use a siphon to suction dirt and other muck off of the gravel.

Keep at least half the tank's water at all times so that you don't have to worry about losing the tank's beneficial bacteria.

Additionally, the siphon can be used to drain some of the tank's soiled water.

Fill the tank with fresh water once you've finished cleaning it.

In no other circumstance should water be added to the aquarium other than this one.

Be sure to use a conditioning treatment to get rid of the chlorine in the water before adding it to the tank.

There will come a time when you will wish to clean your plants, pebbles, and other decorative items because of obvious dirt buildup.

It is safe to put them back in the aquarium after they have been cleaned.

Take these things out of the tank and give them a good washing in running water or soak them in water overnight.
